Median, Mean, & Mode

For each data set, find the mean, the median, and the mode.
Tell which measure you find most useful for decribing the data. Explain why.

1. Maddie scored 7,9,5,3,15 and 15 pionts in 6 basketball games. She wants to show that she is a valuable player.

2. Mr. and Mrs. Rodriquez collected donations of $50, $125, $10, $210, $50, $24, and $175 for charity. They wanted to show that they are good fundraisers.

3. Andy's phone calls lasted 20 min, 7min, 9min, 12min, and 7min. He wants to show how long a tpyical phone call is.

4. A golf team had scores of 383, 392, and 401 strokes in a tournament. The lowest score wins. The team wants to show that it played well.

I will work through the first problem to show you how it’s done, but after that you must use the same rules and apply them to the other three problems.

Since you are trying to find the mean, median, and mode, I’ll explain what those three things are.

Mean - This is the average value of a set of numbers.

In the case of problem #1, your numbers are 7, 9, 5, 3, 15, 15. There are 6 numbers all together right? This is important to know.

To find the mean you must add all of the numbers together, and divide by how many there.

7 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 15 + 15 = 54

54/6= 9

The mean is 9.

Median - This is the number that is in the middle of your set.

So, look at problem #1 and put your numbers in order from lowest to highest.

That would be: 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, 15

There is an even number of numbers (6 total). Since there is no middle number, you must take the 7 and 9 and take their average to get the median.

7 + 9 = 16

16/2= 8

The median is 8.

Mode - This is the number that occurs most frequently in your set.

Since the number 15 occurs twice in your set, this is your number.

The mode is 15.
If there were no numbers that repeated in the data set, there would be no mode.

Now, for the last part of problem #1. Maddie wants to show she is a valuable player. That would mean that she wants to show the highest number of points she scored in a game. The Median is the lowest with 8. The Mean is one point higher at 9. Since the Mode is 15, which is the highest number of points she scored in one game, that’s what she should use to show that she is a valuable player.

Now that you know what the mean, median, and mode are, use the steps I explained above with the other three problems and you'll be all set!
