Topic: Fish & Feelings

ClassBrain Visitor:

Our class question today was, "Do fish have feelings?"  Do they?

ClassBrain Response:

Hi and thanks for stopping by! We hope the following information will help you out.

There are two sides to every issue. In the case of your question about fish having feelings, some people think yes, and some people think no. I thought the best way to answer your question was to give you a resource for both the yes and no sides, so you could decide for yourself what you think is the truth. Since we as humans cannot turn ourselves into fish to find out the truth, we have to base our answer to this question on what we do know about fish.

Here is a link to a page from a group called Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). They believe that all animals have feelings and work to convince other people to believe this. After you read this page about fish, decide what you think is the truth:

Now that you have read the page about fish having feelings, it's a good idea to take a look at the other side of the story. Fishing has been a favorite pastime for many people, and a bonding experience for several generations of Americans. Dads love to take their kids fishing to teach them new things, and to just hang out and have fun. There are many fishing contests that raise money for people in need. Read this article from 14 year old Crystal Unland about her first Bass tournament to raise money for abused kids. It will give you a different idea about fishing:

You have now seen a web page where the writers are convinced that fish have feelings. You have also seen an article by a teen who believes that fishing for a good cause and sharing a bonding experience with her Father is important. It's up to you to decide if fish have feelings like humans do, or if they are just creatures of the Earth, and food for our bellies. It's always good to explore both sides of an issue before making a decision.

Hopefully this will give you something to think about and will help you answer your question about whether fish have feelings or not.
