Dear Classbrain,
I was wondering if you knew how the State of New Mexico got the name "The Land of Enchantment?" I can't seem to find it. I looked but am lost. Do you know?

Shelby C.

Dear Shelby:

Dot feel bad about having a hard time finding this information. We couldt find it on the internet either, so we called New Mexico.

According to Gary at the New Mexico Department of Tourism:

The New Mexico blue book says...
"The New Mexico nickname was first noted in the title of a book by Lillian Whiting in 1906. In 1935, the state tourism director designed a brochure using the tag line of 'The Land of Enchantment.' That same year, New Mexico Magazine started advertising using the slogan."

It just sort of took off.

New Mexico started using "The Land of Enchantment" slogan after the state of Florida stole their original slogan of "The Sunshine State." Because of this fact, New Mexico had their new slogan copyrighted!

We are glad that we could help! :)
