ClassBrain I have a question I am doing a science fair project on if hot air or cold air in a basketball effect the way the ball bounces. I would really appreciate your help on my question. Thank you very much.

Thanks for contacting us. Here's a great article about your subject from the exploratorium.

Be sure to click on continue at the bottom of the page, because this has quite a few pages to read.

Here's an experiment like yours that was done with a tennis ball: Summary of Experiment It gives you background on the project and then what you need to complete the experiment: Experiment How To

Here's one more on how the hot and cold issue affects many different types of balls: Ball Bounces

Apparently it generally better to have a warm ball than a cold one.

You might want to take a look at different brands of basketballs or different price ranges and see what happens. There are some basketballs that are very cheap and others that are fairly expensive. Does it make a difference, or do they bounce the same? Make sure that your air pressure in both balls are the same when you start so that pressure isn't an issue.

Good luck with your science project, and most of all have fun!
