"Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time."
-Lyndon B. Johnson

As you know, our great state and nation are weathering turbulent times. The United States is deep in an extended campaign against terrorism, and it is important that we are prepared for the possibility, however unlikely, of another breach in the security of our homeland.

In the event of a homeland incursion, preparedness will be the key to implementing an effective response. Therefore, it is important that you and your family have a plan in place. The United States Department of Homeland Security recommends that you are prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days. In a rush, it is possible that you may have to improvise; however, if you prepare two emergency kits in advance, you will be at a great advantage. One kit should be lightweight, in case you need to vacate your home. The other should be well-stocked for use at your residence.

Keep the essentials in mind: plenty of water, nonperishable food and shelter. For more information, please visit

Make sure you are familiar with the emergency plan at your workplace, as well as the plan for your children's school. Do not hesitate to ask your employer about the proper procedures, if you do not already know. For more comprehensive information and for helpful tips to guide you, please visit the American Red Cross at

Our country is in a heightened state of alert, a measure that the President and the Department of Security have deemed necessary. To find out more information about the extra precautions that are in place and what they mean to you and your family, you may visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency at In addition, California's Office of Emergency Services,, provides a myriad of useful information and additional Web site links to help keep you informed and prepared in the event of a homeland security breach.

Best wishes for your safety and that of your loved ones. I will update you periodically on issues relating to homeland security, as all Americans watchfully await the safe return of our men and women in uniform.
