Carmel, California
Mission San Carlos is located in the Carmel Valley. Father Serra felt that the land was good there to grow beans, corn, and wheat, the staple of the mission diet. The mission was built according to a basic plan for all California missions.

California Mission Foundation
This second mission was founded June 3, 1770 by Father Serra at the Presidio of Monterey, but moved to Carmel the following year. It was named for St. Charles Borromeo, a Cardinal of the 16th century.
