The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian
The Official Illustrated Movie Companion - Review

The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian, The Official Illustrated Movie Companion is a glimpse onto the set of the second Narnia movie by Disney. Being a movie lover, I've always thought that well done companion books are wonderful. They can enhance the experience of watching the film, and enlighten students of film, as well as movie buffs, on the process of creating a major motion picture. Oftentimes, these books become special collector's pieces, and this book will undoubtedly fall into that category.

Although the Narnia books are often taught with The Horse and His Boy as the second book, Prince Caspian was shot as the second movie to keep a consistent character thread. The Companion explains the order in which this series of movies will be shot, and why. However, this is just one small part of what you'll learn when you read this book. There is so much fascinating information!

Gorgeous photography enhances every page of this companion book. Regardless of which part of filmmaking fascinates you, there is information in the Companion to thrill you. Extensive information on locations, cast, and crew is the meat of the book, but if your tastes tend towards the exotic, there are plenty of special interests in the Companion as well. Make-up, storyboarding, shooting schedules, battle choreography, and special effects are all covered in fascinating detail to my delight.

I was fascinated by the centaurs in the film, and the The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian - Companion shows how they were made, as well as how the other creatures in the film were created. My daughter on the other hand is very into costuming, especially costumes like those used in the film, since she works at the Crossroads Renaissance Faire in Corona, CA. Her favorite section of the book was on Isis Mussenden, the costume designer. Sketches, photos, and an interview with the designer was right up her alley. Not only were the standard costumes covered in the book, but the creation of the armor was detailed as well.

A delightful way to delve into the world of Narnia as it comes alive on screen, The Official Illustrated Movie Companion to the Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian was a great book to pick up over the past few days, and even more of a delight after seeing the film on the big screen. The interviews and background stories add another dimension to the enjoyment of the second of Disney's Narnia films. Well written, well organized, and wonderfully illustrated with photos and sketches, this is a must have book for any fan of the Narnia films.
